About The IGB Freshwater Research and Environmental Database (FRED)

The Freshwater Research and Environmental Database is the central data repository for IGB Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries. It is were we store and share environmental data from observations of lakes, rivers, peatlands and other freshwater habitats. In FRED you can find continuous data collected over several decades for our long-term research programme at the lakes Müggelsee, Stechlinsee, Arendsee and the river Spree, as well as environmental data derived from short-term projects in aquatic ecosystems.

    LakeBase Semantic Service

FRED uses functionality provided by the LakeBase Semantic Service to enable semantic search. The LakeBase Semantic Service has been developed by the Heinz Nixdorf Chair for Distributed Information Systems at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It utilizes vocabularies provided by:

    • Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (CHEBI) by EMBL-EBI (CC BY 4.0), provided through the GFBio Terminology Service
    • Environment Ontology (EnvO) by Pier Luigi Buttigieg , Chris Mungall, et.al. (CC BY 3.0)
    • GeoNames by Marc Wick et.al. (CC BY 4.0), provided through the GFBio Terminology Service
    • Ontology of Units of Measure (OM 2) by Hajo Rijgersberg, Don Willems, Xin-Ying Ren, Mari Wigham, Jan Top, Wageningen University and Research Centre, The Netherlands (CC BY 4.0)
    • Time Ontology in OWL (OWL-Time) by Simon J. D. Cox, Jerry R. Hobbs and Feng Pan (CC BY 4.0)

    Acknowledgments

The development of the IGB Freshwater Research and Environmental Database and the LakeBase Semantic Service was funded by DFG in the scope of the LakeBase project within the Scientific Library Services and Information Systems (LIS) program.
