The Kharaa Yeröö River Basin in Northern Mongolia forms a part of the large Selenga River system which is the main tributary to Lake Baikal in Southern Siberia. The basin of the Kharaa and Yeröö River is characterized by strong environmental gradients. While the headwater areas are characterized by mountain forests that are partially pristine and partially disturbed by logging and forest fires, the mid- and downstream sections especially of the Kharaa are characterized by vast grasslands that have been locally transformed by agriculture, livestock herding, mining and human settlements. These land cover gradients are well reflected by the hydrogeochemical and ecological state of the Kharaa and Yeröö River and its tributaries, which show the greatest disturbances downstream of urban areas and mining sites with a huge range from large gold mining sites until small scale artisanal gold mining.
